Mission Statement

The British Council for Yoga Therapy (BCYT) exists to establish a register of yoga practitioners who work therapeutically in the United Kingdom.

In order to do this, it is taking part in the Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health (PFIH) Voluntary Self-Regulation Programme (VSR), funded by a grant from the Department for Health. There are currently ten different complementary health disciplines on this programme.

In the interests of the safety of individuals seeking yoga therapy, and public confidence in the profession, we are working to ensure that all practitioners registered with the future regulatory body are trained to an agreed minimum standard, and abide by an agreed code of conduct.

Individuals seeking yoga therapy, and the general public, will have the security of knowing that robust grievance and disciplinary procedures will be in place should they wish to make a complaint, while practitioners will have the reassurance that these procedures are fair and transparent.

The BCYT recognises that each of the participating groups has a different approach and gives differing degrees of emphasis to the various aspects of yoga when working with individuals.

The BCYT remains open to future members and interested parties from any and all schools of yoga, welcoming diversity and seeing this as a sign of strength.

In the future, once the regulatory body has been established, all voices will be heard at BCYT by means of a Schools’ Forum.

A Letter from the The Professional Specific Board (PSB)

[The PSB is part of The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council]

London 29th May 2009

The CNHC (The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) register is likely to be open to Yoga Therapists in September 2009.

We want to be able to publicise this as there will be a reduction in fees for those who apply in the first 6 months.

The CNHC want to find a way to ‘fast track’ yoga therapists who meet the new NOS for Yoga Therapy. My proposal to the BCYT is unlikely to be the route. I am waiting to hear further.

Please accept my apologies for the delay in getting back to those who contacted me about having their course ‘recognised’ following my proposal to BCYT. It was good to have so much interest. I will contact everyone when I know more.

This is a time of transition. The continued support of the BCYT and you as training schools / individuals is key and I would like to thank you all for this.

More Details:

PSB      (Professional Specific Board – part of CNHC)

The way in which the CNHC has a link with each profession is through a PSB. There are 4 members on each PSB and the PSB members for Yoga Therapy were selected in March following applications for the posts. They are:

  Jean Danford

  Patsy Sparksman

  Korinna Pilafidis- Williams

  Heather Robinson

We all met with Maggie Wallace, Co Chair of the CNHC after the BCYT meeting last Wednesday. This was our first introduction.

The reduced fee during the first 6 months for the first year’s membership will be £30 but I’m seeking clarification as to whether this includes the £15 checking fee or whether this fee additional. After 6 months the £30 will become £45.

The CHNC are mounting a national advertising campaign and have copy which we may be able to use to advertise in our schools’ newsletters, journals etc. I am waiting to find out more.
